Jenny's Kindergarten Gregory Hills

The children from Jenny's Kindergarten Gregory Hills enjoyed a hands on Composting experience with Dianne from Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living.

Dianne explained in detail the processes with composting and demonstrated the benefits that composting does for our environment.

The children learnt about the four components of composting such as Nitrogen (green ingredients), Carbon (brown ingredients), Oxygen and water.

Dianne provided the children with their own compost bi which they were able to start and demonstrated the layers in order for effective composting and how we can use the compost for our soil to assist our centre vege garden.

The children were actively involved and asked lots of questions such as "How does it make a plant grow?", " What helps our garden to grow?"

Dianne explained that manure is an active ingredient for growth and the children also mentioned they have gardens at home and they help their parents in the garden.

Dianne will be back in the coming weeks to check on our compost bin and assist us with our worm farm.

“Creativity is messy and we are very creative”. To follow on with their current interest in animals, the Beautiful Butterflies room completed a muddy pig craft. This soon led to a sensory experience with shaving foam and paint. The children absolutely loved this experience and the opportunity to explore their sense of touch and get a little messy!

On Tuesday at JK Mount Annan we celebrated Pancake day/Shrove Tuesday by engaging in discussions and cooking activities as all of the rooms engaged in making their own pancakes, which they couldn’t wait to eat!!

As we engaged in Pancake day/Strove Tuesday the children were able to explore diversity and gain an understanding and respect for the different cultures, religions and traditions that are reflected within our community.

This week, the Pre-Kindy children are learning about the benefits of sleeping outdoors!

After reading several articles on how sleeping outdoors improves development such as brain and body functions and can increase children's immunity levels, the children in the Pre-Kindy room had a discussion about sleeping outdoors and were so excited to change their sleeping arrangement.

The children enjoyed this new experience as they listened to the different sounds they could hear and the different things they would see such as clouds or planes!

Today was an exciting day in the Activity Avenue classroom at JK Padstow, we completed our first excursion and it was a success!

The children have been preparing for a couple of weeks now, playing “red light, green light”, learning to hold hands and walk with a partner and talking about where they are going to visit, what they will see and how to behave safely near roads. Before we left the centre, the children listened to Miss Tania’s instructions and played a game of head, shoulders, knees and toes to make sure everyone was listening well. All the children found a friend to hold their hand on the walk, left the centre and walked down the footpath to the M5 overpass, listening to the instructions and staying close to educators.

Once the children arrived at the overpass bridge they each held on firmly to the railing and watched and identified each vehicles colour and size. The children loved it and are already talking about where to go next.

On 19.02.20 Laughing Ladybugs started their class project. The children are creating a mobile for our Provocation Station using natural wooden beads and recycled bottle lids. The children enjoyed this activity as they loved exploring all the different shaped beads and coloured lids. The children used fantastic fine motor skills as well as great hand/eye coordination to thread these onto the string. Once everyone had finished their design we tied these up onto a recycled metal hot plate and hung it up in our Provocation station area for everyone to see. We try to use a balance of recycled and natural resources within the room along with our man made resources. The children learn to explore and respect the environment through the use of these resources.

The families from the Pre Kindy room enjoyed an informative evening as we held our annual Pre kindy information night here at Jenny's Kindergarten Gregory Hills.

We had such a great turn out!

The families were involved in a presentation where the centre showcased our JK prep program and our specialised Early Learning Curriculum. We discussed in detail the importance of independence and socialisation when transitioning to school, and also the partnerships that we are forming with our local neighbouring schools.

Families were able to see our Jolly Phonics program via our computers, Apple TV and our workbooks. Families were advised of up and coming events such as incursions/excursions, scheduled visits such as STEPS, Enunciate speech and Sydney Dental who do our regular dental visits and our SAFE series where we raise awareness of child safety. At the end of the evening we had a question/answer time, where they could ask anything they needed to know about school for 2021 and families were able to purchase their school uniform packs.

The night was a great success!

Our little learners at JK Stanmore celebrated Valentine’s Day by making cards and flowers and visiting the residents at Opal Aged Care in Annandale. Prior to our visit, we had a group discussion about how to stay safe on the road and we revisited some road safety rules including always holding an adult’s hands and only crossing the road at the traffic lights. At the nursing home, our little learners got to give their beautifully crafted Valentine’s Day cards to the residents. They also had fun taking turns to blow bubbles for everyone. This was a great ice-breaker and provided our little learners the opportunity to interact with the elderlies in a fun and relaxed context. The children each got a special treat to take home and returned to the service discussing how some of the residents resembled their aunties and grandparents. Our visit to Opal Aged Care in Annandale offered our little learners the opportunity to explore concepts such as empathy, kindness, compassion and the different stages of life. Looking forward to visiting our new friends in the next few weeks for a fun playdough experience.

Today we introduced some new tinker boards into the room. On each wooden board was several different latches and locks. As the children engaged with the tinker boards they experimented with opening latches, pushing keys into locks, turning keys and manoeuvring hinges. The children used their strong problem solving skills to figure out each item on their board, exploring trial and error and cause and effect. The children all persisted with the tasks until they had successfully managed to work each item.

This week in the Koala room we have started a colour project. The colour we have started with is pink! Our friends have engaged in pink painting and collaging experiences, pink rice sensory experience, pink water and ball experience and have been practicing the song “I can sing a rainbow” ��

The children, families and educators at JK Padstow had so much with the Kindy Farm this week! The children used their prior knowledge of fairness and showing respect for our environment and also discussed what animals live on farms. The educators ensured each child had a turn at feeding, patting and experienced their sense of touch with the animals. We found a lot of baby ducklings, baby chicks, rabbits, a large mother duck, a piglet, calf, and many kids and lambs.

The children loved feeling their wool and fur and listening to the sounds they made. Most of the children really enjoyed feeding the animals and feeling the tickle on their hands, they even got a chance to bottle feed the goats and calf. Many children also began singing Old McDonald and picked out the animals they could see.

Team Building.

At Jenny’s Kindergarten Narellan Vale we value the importance of building strong relationships between our educators.

Communicating effectively and decision making as a team plays a vital part in the successful operation of a centre.

Last night our team were involved in a COOK OFF team building event where two teams had to buy, cook and prepare a main meal and a dessert to present to a panel of judges.

Each team had a set budget and time along with several guidelines.

Along with fun, laughter and determination each team presented meals of the highest quality followed by absolutely delicious desserts.

Exercises such as this help to maintain a positive, happy and effective Early Childhood learning environment at our centre.

Here at Jenny's Kindergarten Riverwood the 2-3yr children have been developing their independence, understanding of their world, environments and how they can contribute. Today Lola, Muhammad, Amelia-Rose and Henley explored cooking. They had the opportunity to join our cook with Doris in the kitchen to make their very own pancakes. With this, the four children were able to not only make their own pancake batter mix from scratch, learning STEM components, But were able to explore, safely and were accompanied by Miss Danilea, an area of the centre that is usually hidden away from them. After completing relevant risk assessments the educators in the 2-3yr room agreed that this would be a most beneficial learning experience for the children, which you can see, they thoroughly enjoyed learning in the kitchen.

What exactly is ‘School Readiness’?

Here at Jenny’s Kindergarten Leichhardt, School Readiness is more than just academics; we recognise and encourage that play-based learning is the most effective way to learn, and that a child’s social and emotional development are just as important as their cognitive.

Going to “Big School” is just one of the many milestones that your child will come across. To help aid this milestone, and allow our children to achieve many goals and skills, our holistic School Readiness Program aims to support a child’s development of their confidence and build their independence. This program, along with our educational resources and qualified team, provides opportunities for your child to develop to their full potential through developing their social interactions, language, emotional development, physical skills, literacy and fine motor skills.

Our program entails a week by week structure, learning about the letters and how to recognise these letters, as well as our sounds. We encourage name writing and recognition and basic mathematics in our everyday play. We also encourage social speaking through our Show-and-Tell program, allowing children to speak about their own interest and engage with others.

This morning it has been a very busy day for the Friendly Frogs and the Pre-Kindy as they participated in our Little Boomers basketball activity where our guest coach taught them how to play basketball which included dribbling, catching, shooting, passing the ball, and balancing. Each one of the children had a bit of exercises before they finally had the opportunity to play actual basketball. The exercises included hopping like a kangaroo and pretending to be like a dinosaur and a duck. The children even did a leaping in line which incidentally was our program for our outdoor play. During group time, the children listened to the topic on the uses of water. During outdoor play too Marcelina was very excited to wear a Princess costume where she said once wearing it "Look I'm a princess". Alicia and Isabella also sat with Marcelina helping her to do a Magnetic Dressing Up Princesses. Because of limited time due to the basketball activity we will be doing the rest of our activities this afternoon.

Aussie Aussie Aussie… OI OI OI!!

It’s Australia Day celebration here at Jenny’s Kindergarten Leichhardt and the children are joining in on the festivities!

We started off out celebration with some yummy Vegemite sandwiches, an iconic Australian treat!

The children then took part and engaged in craft activities – using blue and red to make the Australian flag or brown, yellow, black and red to create Aboriginal colours. These beautiful paintings will be sold to our families and all funds will be donated to the RSPCA to help our Aussie Furry Friends! We also engaged in green and yellow hairspray or decorating ourselves with Australian tattoos – we really got festive!

For lunch we had some yummy meat pies and sausage rolls and topped it off with lamingtons and fruits for afternoon tea – what a great way to celebrate!

The children at Jenny’s Kindergarten Narellan Vale have been growing vegetables, herbs and fruit trees for a number of years and are amazed at the fruit that is currently on their fruit trees.

They regularly water, weed and eat the fruit from the trees and the vegetables and herbs from the veggie garden that they grow.

Our cook Miss Francisca uses the vegetables in her cooking so the children can see the process of growing, preparing and eating the food we grow here at the centre.

We have apples, lemons and oranges on our fruit trees at the moment and the children are waiting with anticipation until they are ready to be picked.

For now they monitor, check and water the trees to ensure they remain healthy for their fruit to grow.

Kid's Inventions Day or 'KID' is celebrated annually on the 17th January.

It is a day to encourage all the children in your life to think outside the box and invent something. That is exactly what the children at Jenny's Kindergarten Leichhardt did!!

The children had collaborated together an idea to create a "Super Marble Run" where they created two obstacle courses to test which one was the fastest!! This also links to our STEM education element as the children approached this learning experience by designing and implementing a playful and inquiry-based experiment using different resources!

The Beautiful Butterflies room at Jenny’s Kindergarten in Narellan have started focusing on the topic “What’s Cooking Good Looking?” This correlates with S.T.E.M learning as part of our Specialised Early Learning Curriculum. Educators are focusing on encouraging the children to become familiar with the science behind cooking and also develop their mathematical language. This week the children made egg free blueberry muffins. We measured the ingredients we were using and each child got to take part in the steps needed to be taken. Next week we will be making pizzas!

The Koala's have recently started their new project, transport. We have been focusing on activities such as trucks digging into play dough, wheeling cars in paint and transferring the patterns onto paper, reading our new transport stories "cars" "trains" "things that go" and a sensory experience using the trucks and shaving foam.

The Dingo children have shown a strong interest in counting of late, exploring numbers and number recognition as well. To extend on this interest we set out a loose parts counting area for the children. We’ve had many discussions about how many of each item we have in the Little Shops and what each number is, as well as the order of the numbers. What great little counters our Dingoes are!

Welcome back everyone!

We have recently introduced story baskets to the Dingo room. This week we are looking at the story ‘10 Tricky Dinosaurs’ and have used some wooden spoons with the characters on them to role play the story. The children use their creativity, imagination and social skills to engage in the experience.

Lots of labelling dinosaurs and matching the character spoons to the story has occurred this week, with deep discussions emerging from the children regarding the story.

Welcome back families!

This week has been all about our hygiene and how it is very important to keep our hygiene up!

The children have been engaging in many conversations about different types of hygiene such as dental hygiene and hand hygiene. To further build upon this, the children engaged in different craft activities such as painting using a toothbrush in a circular motion to understand that when we brush our teeth, the best way to clean them is to go round and round!

We also practised how to catch our sneezes and cough and when we do, we wash our hands!

This week we explored butterflies with a butterfly science experiment. The children were offered a bottle filled with vinegar and a balloon to represent the caterpillar. They were encouraged to fill their balloon with bi carb soda before placing it on top of the bottle and watching as the two ingredients mixed together causing the balloon to grow into a beautiful butterfly.

On Thursday 5th December we had our children’s Christmas party and Pre-Kindy graduation. Many families came, bringing a plate of food to share or a picnic basket for a family picnic. Children came dressed in their Christmas attire and seemed excited to be at the park for a Christmas party. We had a candy cane hunt, which seemed to be enjoyed by all. The Pre-Kindy children, assisted by their parents and staff put on their graduation gowns and hats, they were presented with their certificate of graduation as well as a gift bag and book. At the end, cake was enjoyed by all.

The children have been making Christmas gifts to take home, being creative and festive with their ideas. Christmas gifts from Jenny’s have also started to go home with many children excited to receive their books.

Ho Ho Ho... Merry Christmas from Jenny’s Kindergarten Leichhardt!

On the 12th December 2019, Jenny’s Kindergarten Leichhardt celebrated their annual Christmas Party at the centre – engaging in different festive activities; Christmas cookie decoration, Christmas face painting and using the festive red and green Christmas colours for our nail parlour and hairspray station!!

We then had a very special visit from a very special someone… Santa Claus! The children performed their Rudolph the Reindeer song for Santa and all our families and for being so so great this year, Santa brought us presents too!!

Jenny’s Kindergarten Narellan Vale held a Meet and Greet night on Tuesday at the centre.

This gave all of the existing families and any new families who will be starting at the centre next year an opportunity to come into the centre and meet their child’s Educators for next year.

The Educators were situated in their rooms for next year and the families went to the room that their child will move to after the Christmas break.

The Educators were able to communicate with the families in regards to room routines, individual child needs and the Specialised Early Learning Program.

We had a large amount of families attend and they were very positive and thankful for this opportunity to help make the transition a bit smoother in the New Year.

On Friday, 29th November Jennys Kindergarten Narellan Vale held their annual Christmas Concert Extravaganza.

More than 540 people attended the event held in the outdoor playground at the centre.

25 raffle prizes were drawn, 450 sausages were cooked and sold along with drinks, snacks and lucky dips.

But the most special part of the night was by far the looks on the faces of the families as each room performed their concert items up on the stage!

It’s moments like these that make memories to last a lifetime.

The children danced and sang and performed their little hearts out to their favourite Christmas carols and songs.

As Early Childhood Educators, it is so rewarding to see children grow and develop so quickly and to be a part of their learning each day!

We spent the afternoon, receiving our Pre-School Certificates and a starter pack for Big School. We enjoyed a slideshow of our years here at Jenny’s Kindergarten Leichhardt, with the friendships we have created over the years, all of our learning and fun times!

Over the last few weeks, all of the children at Jenny’s kindergarten Narellan Vale have been involved in completing craft to be apart of our Christmas Tree.

This year we decided to create our own Christmas Tree for our foyer display. Each age group was given a box of a different size to decorate as their part of the tree.

The children made candy canes, angels, baubles, collage, painted reindeer's and after school care even made a star from natural materials.

All of the pieces were placed in size order to create our beautiful tree.

We are very proud of the finished product and the children love to show their families as they enter the centre each day.

At JK Padstow we celebrated the graduation of the children heading to primary school in 2020. Our graduation celebration is a time to look over the children’s time at the centre and celebrate all they have achieved.

Each child received a graduation certificate and shared a song with their families. We also enjoyed a video of the children sharing their favourite things at Jenny’s Kindy and what they want to be when they grow up.

This week in the Koala room we have continued with our colour project, focusing on the colour BLUE! The Koala’s have enjoyed making blue cupcakes and decorating them, blue paintings using different brushes, using their fine motor skills to make patterns in blue play dough with different blue objects and singing “I can sing a rainbow” using the felt board.

The Dingoes have loved getting to know the new baby chickens and ducks over the last few weeks. The children have especially loved the baby ducks, watching them swim and explore the water. What a great experience this was for the children.

Pre k h continue to learn about the ocean. This week the children investigated several sea animals and did a fishing and sensory play experience.

They children have delighted in watching the ducks and chickens grow. They enjoy watching and holding them everyday.

We got a pet fish for the room that the children named star.

The children in the Laughing Ladybugs room have been learning about recycling this week.

They had items placed around their room and they had to determine whether to put the items into the recycling bin or the garbage bin. They discussed what items can be recycled such as paper, cardboard and bottles and things that can’t be recycled such as chip packets and glad wrap. The children watched the recycling truck empty the neighbours bins from the playground and the garbage man honked the horn and waved to them. It is important for the children to be involved in learning how to recycle for the future of the environment and we include these things in our specialised early learning curriculum on a regular basis.

This week has been our national recycle week. All of our rooms engaged in a range of activities, experiences and discussions which are supportive of us being more sustainable. We even made some great displays in our rooms and the pre kindy room also made a compost display that the children all worked on as they reflected on composting.

The children are really loving the compost and making sure that it is fed regularly with any food scraps or leaves which they have been busy collecting from our yard. The worms are also being well looked after. The children in all the rooms are gaining a really good understanding of reusing and recycling as we are always busy making things as well as doing things with our recycled boxes and materials.

This week we also started our lunch box week (which will also run next week). This is a great experience for our JK prep children and our pre kindy room as they engage in this experience to assist them when they go off to big school. They are loving putting in their lunch orders every day and then we have helpers who take this to the ‘canteen’. At lunch the children are then getting practice opening and closing lunch boxes, their lunches as well as their drink bottles

On Tuesday, the children and educators at JK Padstow wore red and raised money for the Salvation Army Disaster Appeal. We raised $80 which will help the families affected by the bushfires. The educators have used the recent bush fires to discuss fire safety with the children, including what to do during the fire, the number to call and what are safe and unsafe fires. The children also practiced their stop, drop, cover and roll, get down low and go, go, go, and watched videos about how firefighters put out fires and the equipment they use.

During this time the children from the Shining Stars, Racing Rockets and Pre-Kindy had the opportunity to learnt about the importance of the red poppy, which is a symbol to remember all of the people who had given their lives to fight in World War 1. Brett the Bee Keeper came and visited the children at JK Padstow. The children have been exploring insects, finding ants and ladybirds in our outdoor environment. Brett came and talked to the children about Bees, how they make their honeycomb and collect honey from flowers. He also played a fun game to teach the children what to do if a bee lands on you, using his toy bee. The children stood very still until the bee flew to the next child. Brett showed the children the different equipment he uses when caring for his bees and even one of the frames from his bee hive. The children and educators even got to try honey fresh from Brett’s bee hive. What a wonderful experience to extend upon the children’s learning about insects, thanks Brett!

The children from Jenny’s Kindergarten Gregory Hills enjoyed a visit from the local council recycling truck on Tuesday 5th November and Wednesday 6th November.

The children all had the wonderful opportunity to take a tour of the recycling truck and watched how the truck picks up the bins and lifts them up using the hydraulic lifters. The most exciting part was when Denise spoke about the importance of recycling and explained that each bin had a different colour, eg red for waste, green for grass clippings and yellow for recycling glass, plastics and cardboard.

The children were so appreciative of the visit and extended their gratitude to Denise and Dean by saying “Thank you” and waving to Dean as he drove away.

We have been busy at JK Mount Annan as we continue to follow on from our visit from Mount Annan centre for sustainability with lots of feeding and caring for our compost. We are looking to replant many of our discovery gardens and start again as we still have many seeds sets which families have donated. We are planning to get onto our second run, implementing seeds into bigger pots from the start as well as adding them to our pallet garden. The children always enjoy taking care of our gardens and making sure they have plenty of water.

We had an uncle and aunt week last week and it was wonderful to have some uncles and aunties join us for a morning of play. We always love having visitors!!

On Wednesday, at Jenny's Kindergarten Padstow our Centre Manager Helen shaved her head to raise money for cancer research. After tying Helen’s hair in 8 plaits, the educators at JK Padstow cut the 55cm long plaits. The educators and Helen’s daughter, Audrey then shaved her head. Thank you to our generous families and friends who have helped to raise almost $1200 for Love Your Sister, a charity dedicated to cancer research. Helen’s hair will be donated to Variety, the children’s charity as part of their Hair with Heart program.

The children in the Toddler Red room created an awesome carwash out of recycled materials and street signs we had at the centre. The children opted for their outdoor play to be brought indoors and enjoyed taking their bikes for a wash. The children also made cars with their educators out of boxes they got from Bunnings. They drove their cars in and out of the car wash. This activity was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The children were engaged in this activity for the duration of the day. The children with the assistance of their Teachers upcycled their car wash in time for Halloween and made it into a spooky house. The house was set at the entrance of the room so it was the way you had to enter inside. The children and their families all enjoyed themselves as their room was transformed into a Halloween themed play space.

Last week, the Pre-Kindy group went on an excursion to the Woolworth's Discovery Tour. This allowed the children the opportunity to have a “behind-the-scenes” experience. The store manager took the children through the fruit and vegetable section where they made a fruit rainbow. The children were then taken to the seafood section and bakery where they had hands-on experiences with bread dough. They visited cool store sections where the milk and ice cream are stored. Our centre also explored Halloween through sensory learning experiences, such as spider slime and making witch’s brews. The children made paper mache pumpkins and wore dress-ups. We have been busy celebrating Diwali. Some of our families who celebrate this sent through some wonderful photos of their children dressed in costume as they engaged in Diwali celebrations. One family also made some yummy Indian sweet treats that are made during this time, bringing in platters of treats to share with everyone at our centre!! We all had a great time sampling these goodies! Each room engaged in a range of craft, dancing and discussions during our Diwali celebrations.

Following on from our visit from Mount Annan centre for sustainability where we were assisted to set up our compost bin, all the rooms have been engaged in discussions and activities to further this. The pre kindy room made some great compost bags for their display so that we all know what can go in our compost. Also all the rooms have been involved in ‘feeding’ our compost as well as looking after our worm farm and gardens.

We also celebrated Halloween with a fun day much to the enjoyment of all the children. We discussed what this is with many children saying they were going to go trick or treating with their family. We made spiders, ghosts and pumpkin pictures to decorate our rooms as well as some pumpkin and monster biscuits. Some of our friends also dressed up in some great costumes. Lots of fun was had by all!!

On Wednesday, we celebrated Grandparents Day at Jenny’s Kindergarten Narellan Vale.

We had a large number of grandparents attend this event. The children were engaged in a variety of activities with their grandparents in the outdoor learning environments, some of which included making iced biscuits, plaster painting, gardening, threading necklaces, parachute play and games, construction of buildings and reading books together.

Morning tea was provided and everyone engaged themselves in these fun activities. Linking with our families and extended families in the community is an important aspect of our program.

This week Healthy Harold come to visit and talk about road and sun safety. The children learnt how to be sun safe and sang songs with Harold and Miss Joanne. They had discussions about keeping safe at the beach and were advised to always swim between the flags, apply sunscreen regularly, where rash tops to protect your skin from the sun and use an umbrella to keep the sun away whilst you relax at the beach.

The children also learnt about road and car safety where they played a game called bums up bums down. The children were told a phrase and had to stand up for the correct thing to do and sit down if it was incorrect, this game was enjoyed by all.

Crossing the road at the crossing - bums up
Running across the road - bum down
Running on the road to get a ball - bum down

Friendly frogs and pre-kindy practised crossing the pretend road with Miss Joanne by holding hands and ensuring they look left then right and also hear for the traffic. The children enjoyed this practised and followed the correct procedure of stopping, holding hands (with an adult), looking left and right (more than once) then proceed to cross.

This week the children at Jenny’s Kindergarten Leichhardt had a special visit from KiKi the friendly dog! We learnt the importance of living safely with dogs and not to be afraid of them but to also be very cautious with unknown dogs! We also learnt many important things such as when dogs should be left alone, things we shouldn't do to dogs, how you tell if a dog is happy, scared or angry. We also learnt the safest way to approach and greet a dog is by holding out your fist and letting them sniff your scent. We then let Kiki the friendly dog sniff our scent before she let us pat her!

We had such a busy and fun week at Jennys Kindergarten Narellan. We have had a busy week as all rooms have continued with our planting projects. Our families have continued to keep us in good supply with the seeds as they regularly drop off any discovery gardens that they have collected for us.!! It has been great to see some of our seedlings start to sprout – we all get very excited about this.

The children love checking on these daily and giving them a good water using the recycled bottles that we have made. Hopefully, these continue to grow as we are all looking forward to replanting these out in our garden.

Over the last few weeks, the Grasshoppers have been exploring the five senses. First they learnt about the sense of touch - involving many touch and feel sensory activities. Jenny's Kindergarten Gregory Hills

The children at Jenny's Kindergarten Gregory Hills embraced Fire Prevention Week and got a special visit from Catherine Fields Fire and Rescue on Tuesday 8th October.

This was a very hands-on interactive experience for the children who were lucky enough to have a tour of the fire truck, use the fire hose and listen to a presentation on fire safety.

The children presented the team a certificate of appreciation for all of their efforts and dedication to keeping us safe.

The children in the Nursery room drew a pretend fire on their wall and practised how to put a fire out using their hose.

The best part of the day was when the fire engine started and the sirens went off, the children found this to be their favourite part of the visit!

During fire prevention week, the teachers planted a flint which is a fire hazard and waited to see if anyone would find it.

The children have been having discussions about fire safety and Flint the fire hazard has been introduced into our class discussions.

Two children found the 'fire' outside and alerted Miss Nat who raised the alarm with the centre. From this, we conducted our fire drill and all the children responded so well to the drill which flowed smoothly.

Suns out, fun's out!

Take a look at this spring weather, this week the children have been exploring our outdoor environment, using their exploring skills to discover the changes in the garden. After discovering the garden, the children have noticed that the plants are “waking up” and “making lots of colours.” The educators noticed the children’s growing interest in the garden and ceased the opportunity to expand on their inquisitive thoughts through a planting experience.

This week at Jenny’s Kindergarten & Early Learning Leichhardt, the Racing Rockets learned all about Egypt!

As we explore different countries each month, we focus on our SELC element, “World Travellers” – the children focus on different aspects of countries and their culture!

The Racing Rockets participated in craft activities such as creating pyramids and focusing on the triangular shape and also engaged in a craft activity exploring the Eye of Ra.

The ‘World Travellers’ element allows children to understand one another and how much we have in common, as well as what makes us individuals. This element invites children to look further into the beauty of each country and explore their peer's cultures. The children are exposed to diverse music, food, dresses, and traditions!

On Friday the 4th of October, we had a special guest named Francesca, Christian's sister. She conducted a presentation for the pre kindy room about a school lunch box. As a group, we discussed things like, what's in a lunch box? Who opens the lunch box? Where do you put a lunch box? Do you like lunch at school? The pre kindy room had the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation.

This week at Jenny’s Kindergarten Leichhardt, it was all about our environment!

As we have taken part in the Woolworth's Discovery Garden, the children have shown extensive interest in our environment!

We spent the week, nurturing our garden by watering it and monitoring its growth – this relates back to our Specialised Early Learning Curriculum element; “Enviro-Club” as the children engage in hands-on activities and further their understanding of the environment!

This week as the crawling caterpillars continue with our spring topic we decided to begin our discovery garden. We all sat down at the table and placed all the seeds on the table that are ready to grow this season. The children were then asked what one they would like to plant, each taking turns to add water to the soil with a little assistance from the educators before adding them to the pots. The children are excited to see our plants progress through their growing stages.

This week we had a sports dress up week as part of finals fever. The children and staff loved wearing their sports gear to preschool – lots of fun was had!!

All of our rooms have been busy with planting and watering our gardens. Our families have been so supportive of our gardening with many of our families bringing in their Woolworth's discovery gardens that they have collected. All the rooms have started on getting these planted with the children keen to take care of them by giving them water and ensuring that they have some sunshine. We can’t wait for more of them to sprout!!

Outside play as been busy as the children explore their environment and make discoveries. The sand pit is always a busy area as is our exploring pit as the children put on their gloves and do some digging in the soil. The climbing equipment is always busy as the children test out their physical skills, climbing up the rock wall and over the rope bridge.

On Friday, 27th September Jenny’s Kindergarten Narellan Vale celebrated Fight Cancer Footy Colours Day.

We raised money for the Fight Cancer Foundation. All of the children and Educators wore their favourite team colours and jerseys to help raise money for this deserving cause. The children were involved in playing football and talking about their favourite teams. They were given a footy colours day sticker for participating as well.

We would like to thank all of our families for supporting this event.

Jenny's Kindergarten Padstow

On Monday we had a special visit from David Coleman who is an Australian Liberal Party politician. Then on Thursday we were delighted to welcome our special guests, Uncle Con, an Aboriginal Elder and Tess, an animal carer from Taronga Zoo.

On Monday, David Colman had taken a tour of our centre, interacting with all the children present that day. He even stopped past Activity Avenue, the 2-3 year old room and entertained them with the story of the hungry caterpillar.

On Thursday, we were so lucky to listen to Uncle Con share his knowledge of the land and Aboriginal culture and to listen to Tess share her knowledge about the animals she brought in all the way from Taronga Zoo. This was an engaging experience of storytelling, music and introducing the children to a wide variety of unique and wonderful animals, such as a frog, possum, lizard and snake. To extend on the Aboriginal culture, boys were selected to come forward and play the didgeridoo, where the girls were selected to play with the clapping sticks. Together, the children joined in a range of songs and were encouraged to dance and sing along in harmony.

This week at Lane Cove, we have been focusing on Pirates and culture following on from the Autumn Moon Festival. Our classrooms were exploring different ways to find treasure, the reason behind our Pirate Day costumes and what it represents. The children in the 2-3’s room were very bust this week potting their seeds for their Woolworth's Discovery Garden.

First they chose what they wanted to plant. Next they soaked the soil disc in water and watched it expand. They then placed the soil into their pot and carefully placed the seed layer on top before adding a little more soil to cover it.

The label was placed into the pot and the pots were placed on the planter tray.

We are now eagerly waiting for the seeds to sprout and can’t wait to see them grow and produce vegetables and herbs in the coming months.

Ahoy there! The children here at Jenny's Kindergarten Leichhardt celebrated 'Talk Like A Pirate' Day on Thursday 19th September and we had an adventure!

The children were encouraged to come dressed up as a Pirate and engage in different activities such as painting our faces with eye patches and scruffy beards! The children also engaged in different craft experiences such as painting pirates.

Our favourite activity was indeed the Pirates treasure hunt... the little pirates searched high and low for the treasure and we sure found them...

so much loot!

This week at Jenny's Kindergarten Gregory Hills we celebrated Roald Dahl Day.

The children throughout the centre have enjoyed being creative and expressing their interests in all things Willy Wonka!

They made giant candy bon bons and golden tickets. They also enjoyed watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and had a discussion which revolved around what do we do in a movie theatre. The children were so excited to see the children in the movie find the golden tickets! To create the feel of the movies, the children sat on their chairs like they were in the cinema and had popcorn as a treat!

Spring has truly sprung here at Jenny's Kindergarten Leichhardt!

The children have been exploring their Urban Kindy element as they enjoy their natural environment and are free to explore and play, enabling the children to connect with the space and their land! They then engaged in their Enviro-Club element by planting new seeds within the garden as we reach a new season! The children were then encouraged to water and nurture the plants throughout the week. To finish the week off with a BANG, the children then explored the Arts element by engaging in a craft activity where they explored numbers and spring as they created flowers! What a beautiful way to enter Spring!

We have been busy within all the rooms as we follow and extend on the children’s interests and skills.

The Pre Kindy room are continuing on with the children’s interests in books from our book week theme as they continue to explore some of their favourites. They have enjoyed reading and discussing Alice in Wonderland and have extended on this further through their amazing Alice in wonderland home corner which the children just love!!

The Possums are loving exploring in the water as they have been washing babies as well as taking care of the babies in our home corner area. This interest has come from the children as many have recently welcomed little brothers or sisters into their families.

The Echidnas have been busy furthering their fine motor strength skills as they manipulate the playdough with their hands as well as using the playdough scissors. They have also enjoyed ripping and scrunching paper to further build on their fine motor skills.

Our Lane Cove North Centre has been focusing on celebrating the Autumn Moon Festival last week and learning more about the Chinese Culture. We had the Gigalees Circus Show attend Jenny’s Kindergarten Narellan Vale this week. The show was filled with tricks, stunts, fun and laughter.

The children were engaged in watching juggling acts, balancing stunts, magic and jokes.

This incursion allowed the children to hypothesize, predict and to use their imagination and thinking skills.

On Wednesday, we invited Issac and Noah’s grandma to come to our centre and read some stories to the children and sing songs in Arabic. The children had a wonderful time as they engaged in story time with her, and showed great interest in the Arabic language. The children repeated after her, counting in Arabic and identifying colours in Arabic.

The children in the Toddler Yellow room were getting ready to celebrate Roald Dahl week which will be held at our centre on Friday 13th September. This week the Koala's have been reading the story "cows go moo" and engaging in sensory activities to extend on from that. The Koala's have been using their fine motor skills, hand eye co-ordination skills and social skills to engage in activities which include touching the materials on the animals, paint stamping with animal stamps, cotton ball paintings of sheep and listening to different animal sounds.

This week the Dingo's began a new project focusing on the weather. We explored rain and the sound of rain with some blue sensory rice scooping and pouring experience. We investigated clouds with our blue play dough and cotton balls, counting how many clouds we were adding to our blue skies. We also celebrated the end of winter with some winter wonderland art, using blue and purple paint and balloons to print on their paper adding glitter to the end product to create our shiny snow.

This week Pre K have extended our literacy skills. Each day we read a book "Harriet, you'll drive me wild." and we examine a different ending or beginning of the story. We flip the story, examine the feelings within the story and create an interpretation of the story.

We have been enjoying the beautiful weather during our Urban Kindy excursion to Kibble Park. The children have been using their imaginative skills and cooperative play skills whilst they have created bear hunts, monster traps, power gem hunts and super hero games.

We also celebrated 2 birthdays this week with Paige and Ella-Rae both turning 5.

We celebrated Educators day with a yummy morning tea and gifts for the educators. Our families also shared their thanks for the wonderful job that our team does in their roles of early childhood educators.

All the children have been loving this warmer weather with all rooms continuing to reinforce the sun safety messages. The children are doing a great job of putting their sunscreen on and they love checking in the mirror to make sure it is all rubbed in!

A Very Cranky Bear project

In our JK Stanmore service our Toddler Blue room have been exploring a project that begun with the book A Very Cranky Bear. This high interest from the children has evolved into various learning opportunities that our educators have been facilitating and empowering the children to take charge of their learning. The Toddler Blue children have been exposed to dramatic play experiences acting out the book through our outdoor areas, early literacy development, exploring their fine motor skills through threading experiences the educators have created and so much more. It is through this age where it is crucial for children to develop emotional regulation which has been a high focus from our educators. Through our Cranky Bear project that the children are highly engaged and demonstrating their curiosity, imagination and communication. Reading this book has enabled our children here at Stanmore to increase their willingness to express themselves and communicate their thoughts and feelings. We cannot wait to continue this journey with the children to see where else it leads!

On Wednesday the JK Mortlake Busy Butterflies and Pre Kindy children had a special visit from Rochelle one of the local Bee Keepers.

Bee Keeper Rochelle had brought along a range of items she uses to take care of her bees. Rochelle was dressed up in her special bee keeping suit which prevents her from being stung by the bees, Rochelle also had brought along her ‘Bee Smoker’ this helps Rochelle open her beehive. The children were fascinated as they learnt that the pollen the Bee’s collect is stored in their legs. The children had a chance to pretend they were Bee’s and do the ‘Wagal Dance’ venturing off around the yard, collecting pollen and coming back to their hive to share what they had collected by doing the special dance.

The children were able to touch and feel a range of items that Bee Keeper Rochelle had brought along with her including Propolis which the bees use to plug holes in their hives to protect themselves, propolis is also used as medication which can help sooth a sore throat.

At the end of talk the children were able to try some of the honey that Bee Keeper Rochelle’s bee’s had collected from her very own Bee’s

We celebrated Father’s Day and incorporated the theme of Super Hero's. The Busy Bees Room started their day by asking their Dads to join our Father’s Day raffle where we had prizes to give away which included Super Hero figurines and coasters.

The children all dressed up as super hero's. We also played a game called “Pin Dad’s shirt” where the words “Best Dad” was written on the shirt. This was a fun game for all to participate.

On Friday the children enjoyed a lovely afternoon outdoors with the special men in their lives for Father’s Day. The children engaged in a range of activities such as parachute games with the outdoor parachute, making iced biscuits with smarties on them to enjoy, playing with soccer balls and footy's and making castles in our sandpit. The activities the children enjoyed the most was our planting station and photo booth. The children potted some beautiful flowers into our outdoor planters ready for the beautiful spring weather to watch them grow in our veggie patch area. Over at our photo booth the children loved wearing various types of hats and taking happy snaps with their Dads. We thank everyone that attended our Father’s Day Afternoon, we hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did!

At Jenny’s Kindergarten Stanmore we extremely value children’s foundation in literacy development. There has been a large interest from the children in the Pre Kindy room at Stanmore. The ability to extend the children's social skills whilst adapting their creativity in dramatic play has been a focus from our Teacher Edwin as he prepares the children for school. To extend children's interest in dramatic play, we have set up this provocation play corner where the children engage alongside their peers as they wish positively challenging each other with the storytelling. We believe in immersing children in a literacy-rich environment with open ended resources.

This week the Growing Grasshoppers have been learning all about healthy eating! Inspired by the book brought in for book week called ‘piranhas don’t eat bananas’. The children learnt all about the different fruits and vegetables with some painting, matching, sensory and cooking experiences. The children really enjoyed the learning experiences especially the Friday cooking where we got to make cup cakes for the Father’s Day BBQ. This was the children’s chance to learn about ‘sometimes’ foods. Letting the dads try the blue cupcakes was a great end to the week.

This week we have all been busy making our father’s day gifts ready for father’s day on Sunday. All our rooms made something special for their dad. Hope all our dad’s and granddad’s have a wonderful father’s day !!

On Tuesday we had a visit from Cheryl at Narellan library. She visited both the possums and the pre kindy's, reading stories, singing songs and engaging them in fun activities. We all loved having Cheryl here and such a wonderful way to connect with our local community. It was wonderful having this visit as it followed on from our book week celebrations last week.

We are looking forward to having our dads visit us next week as we continue with our father’s day celebrations with our father’s week.

This week the Koala’s have been busy focusing on their sensory project. Together we made lemon �� smelling/tasting play dough and have been exploring it in many ways including placing it in the home corner and using it for dramatic play. We have also used it with baking trays, rollers, spoons and shape cutters.

Pre K have been reading the book Tortoise and the Hair. We have then explored different scenarios of the book. We have wondered what would have happened if the Tortoise found his hair, what the dog would do now that he had the hair, what might have happened if the bus crashed. This activity is to develop the children's imagination and cognitive skills as well as their critical thinking skills.

Book Week

This week was BOOK WEEK! Which also coincided with our book fair. We had our scholastic book fair set up in our main foyer for families to purchase books for their children.

Reading is a very important foundation for children to have in their lives so we always encourage our families to purchase books and read to their children.

We had our educators and children take part in our book week dress up and we had an array of exciting characters at the centre!

The children looked amazing and were involved in reading their favourite books along with a variety of other story based activities.

We have had a fun dress up week as part of our book week celebrations and it has been great to see all of our children getting right into this and our educators too! For our book week this week the theme was reading is our super power so within all our rooms we reinforced the message of reading and the value in this. All rooms engaged in stories and discussions as we shared some of our favourite books. Lots of fun was had over the week.

On Friday we celebrated Daffodil day with lots of yellow!! We painted daffodils, coloured daffodils as well as playing with yellow play dough, as we raised money for this worthy cause.

This week all the children at Jenny’s Kindergarten Oatley have been celebrating Book Week. The children in each of the rooms were invited to dress up as their favourite character or share their favourite book throughout the week.

We had lots of great costumes and the children were even surprised when many of our educators also shared in this event by dressing up also.

The children were able to be involved in a number of different experiences throughout the week, including exploring the roles people play in making books, reading lots of our favourite stories and even making some stories of our own.

The Koala’s have been exploring their self help skills recently, engaging in many different experiences to develop these skills. Their favourite new trick however is feeding themselves during meal times. The children eagerly grip and control their cutlery utensils feeding themselves independently with great pride.

The Dingoes have been busy investigating Book Week with many different book themed experiences.

Our ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ sensory tub has been a huge hit with all of the children.

They have eagerly explored the tub discussing the smell of the coffee beans and the different items they know from the story.

To celebrate BOOK WEEK at Jenny's Kindergarten Hurstville we planned an excursion to attend our local library. The children were very excited as they put their safety vests on and headed to the library with our educator's and were lucky to have a parent (Nicole) volunteer to come along with us. At the library the children thoroughly enjoyed sitting together and were lucky enough to have the librarian read 'Rainbow Bear' to them. To further, the children created some beautiful artwork related to the book, Rainbow Bear.

This week we have had the mobile dentist come in to check the children’s teeth and talk to the children about healthy oral hygiene. The children each took turns to sit on the seat, put on some really cool glasses and have their teeth counted, checked and cleaned with the “yummy” water. Once completed the children were then given a really awesome present which included and coloured tooth brush, vanilla toothpaste, dental floss, stickers and the mirror that was used during their check-up. After the children had finished with the check-up the dentist Amir then went upstairs to talk to the older children about healthy oral hygiene, show pictures and explain their importance of brushing our teeth every day. This has also started an interest in the rooms for the children to learn more

Book Week has been full of excitement and literature for us this week. Each room had their own way of celebrating Book Week from bringing the Hungry Caterpillar alive, to making dream jars, creating a Snowman for Elsa’s story to baking the cupcakes from the Hungry Caterpillar. We were so lucky this week to have gotten so many parents sparing their time to come in and take part in our Book Week. The children from Activity Avenue at JK Padstow went on an excursion to Maria’s Fresh Flowers in Padstow. The children are currently learning about gardening and also daffodil day.

The children and educators travelled by Bus and walked for a couple of minutes past a variety of shops to the Maria’s Fresh Flowers.

Maria was so welcoming and spoke to the children about the different types of flowers, that the flowers come from a flower farm and you have to give them water to keep them alive. Maria gifted each of the children a carnation, plus a bunch of daffodils for our classroom and some pansies that the children are excited to plant in their garden. The children and educators had a wonderful time seeing all the beautiful flowers, thank you Maria for letting us visit.

This week the children in the Pre-Kindy and Koala rooms celebrated National Science Week. They explored space, as this was the theme for this year, by making their own rocket, dressing up as an astronaut and also doing a rocket experiment with bicarbonate soda and vinegar and watching as the two ingredients mixed together and the rocket shot up into the sky. We looked at the moon and also were able to view a video of the first man landing on the moon’s surface.

Meanwhile, the children in the Wombat room have taken an interest in painting and craft experiences.

This week at our Lane Cove North Centre, we have explored Science Week in every classroom. We were very lucky to have one of our mums come in to celebrate Science Week with us. Ms Georgina had previously ran her own Science Investigating classes and brought in all the materials to conduct some experiments and lessons with the children. We had our very own Science Incursion, all thanks to Sean’s Mummy. The children had the chance to build on the concept of Cause and Effect, looking at the different substances and liquids mixed together to create some sort of effect. Ms Georgina also showed us Dinosaur Fossils and the children used microscopes to examine all of these. Thank you to Ms Georgina for allowing us to end science week with a BANG!

This week the koalas have been focusing on their sensory project and engaging with their new sensory toys.

We have been busy carrying out activities such as using b alls to paint, holding b alls with foam and r eading our story of the week “TASTE”.

The Dingoes have been busy making different types of juice this week, using their strong manipulative skills to twist and squeeze their fruit pieces onto their juicers. Once they were finished they poured their juice into the cup and had a sip, tasting several different flavours throughout the week. We made orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice and grapefruit juice.

This week Pre K continued their occupation project. We explored police officers and made police cars. The children have also been engaged in dramatic play about police at urban Kindy and in the outdoor play area. We have also been enjoying engaging with texts in new ways such as story retelling and making our own books.

As part of Dental Health Week and Science Week the children at JK Padstow have been learning about taking care of our teeth. We had a dental hygienist and the tooth fairy come and visit us from KDS Dental Services. The children learnt about foods that help keep your body and teeth healthy, read stories and sang songs about healthy teeth and even got to practice brushing just like the dentist does.

At JK we believe that building links with our community is important. It allows children opportunities to meet and understand the roles of our local community members by having them visit the centre.

This week we have had our dental health week. We have explored dental health and hygiene within all our rooms through a range of activities, stories and discussions. The children have enjoyed brushing the big teeth, brushing the dolls teeth as well as engaging in a range of toothbrush craft. We discussed and read all about how to brush our teeth, learnt about Dentist Rabbit as well as Brush-a-lot-amus.

Kate from Tiny Teeth Early Education visited us to extend the children’s knowledge further. The children loved this hands on and interactive educational visit and spent the rest of the afternoon discussing this!!

It’s National Science week! All of the children at Jenny’s Kindergarten and Early Learning Narellan Vale have been participating in a wide variety of fun and exciting STEM science activities.

These have included volcano’s, exploding bottles, colouring flowers, mixing colours with skittles, sinking and floating and measuring.

The children were able to hypothesize, predict and interpret during these activities.

These experiments enabled the children to be involved in things they probably hadn’t seen before.

Our Lane Cove North Centre has been focusing on Dental Hygiene and Care this week. All the rooms explored dental week in their own way. On Friday 2nd August we celebrated Jeans for genes day with the children and educators wearing jeans on this day. We engaged in many craft activities and discussions as we raised money for this worthy cause. Thanks to all that contributed as we raised $60 for this cause.

We also celebrated International Friendship day and the importance of friendships and being a good friend. Lots of discussions were undertaken in all our rooms as well as lots of friends photos taken and shared. Preschool photos time again as we all dressed for the occasion. Recently, in the Pre-Kindy Yellow room, the children have been learning about Australia. There has been a recent focus on Australian landmarks and Australian stories, as well as encouraging the children to learn about Indigenous Australians and how they can show their respect. The children have participated in some learning and crafts based around the Australian landmarks including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House, Uluru and Great Barrier Reef. With the children’s interest in the story ‘Possum Magic’ we decided to treat the children with an Australian food experience including a special lunch experience: Vegemite sandwiches, party pies and sausage rolls! Parent input has been promoted by encouraging the children to bring in Australian stories from home that we can read as a class. We’ve also asked parents to send through some photos of their children/family anywhere within Australia that we can add to our ‘Australia’ display.

The Busy Bees at this stage are focusing on developing their language as well as their cognitive skills. In relation to this we have been implementing activities where the children learn about the alphabet. For this month we started with letters A-E and the children are learning to identify the letters and the words associated with the letters. We have given out their first Early Learning Book which contains the letters of the alphabet as well as corresponding picture that start with the alphabet. We have also simultaneously learnt to count from numbers 1-10.

The Pre-Kindy room are focusing to read and write through an early systematic phonics program. The children are sounding out the letter's in the alphabet and practising to write their names which we implement on a daily basis. The children have been developing skills through planned and unplanned learning experiences which include reading books, visual arts and short videos. As a group this week we discussed dental health and general hygiene and we will continue to learn about our digestive system as an ongoing interest.

This week Friendly Frogs focused on health and hygiene. The Educators taught the children how effective a simple method such as washing our hands regularly can prevent germs from spreading. This is an embedded practise within the Jenny's Kindergarten as we ensure we wash our hands thoroughly before and after we eat, and after using the toilet. We also focused on dental hygiene and the importance of keeping our teeth clean. To further our discussions, together we read a book about dentists which reminded the children to brush their teeth morning and night to ensure we keep our teeth nice and white!

For the month of August the crawling caterpillars have had a blast as we decided to continue with our nursery rhyme project due to our children’s growing interest after we created some yummy cupcakes. We have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a range of different activities over the past two weeks creating lots of different art works to reflect the nursery rhyme that we have been focusing on each day, baking and singing all the different songs we have been learning. We have also been focusing on music and movement over the past week as the children thoroughly enjoyed creating their own music during one of our group times.

The Pre-Kindy class from JK Padstow explored Playford Park as part our Urban Kindy Program. Urban Kindy provides the children with an outdoor environment and unstructured time for them to learn in. Children have uninterrupted play in the park, using what nature has provided as learning materials. Urban Kindy is a valuable part of our Pre-Kindy children’s total experience at Jenny’s Kindergarten. National Tree Day has been a week long exploration of plants and growing at JK Padstow. The Native Sensory Garden has been a work in progress for most of this year, with the first plants planted on Schools Tree Day on Friday 26th July. Each class planted an Aussie Sunset shrub with the children working hard to dig the holes, carefully plant the shrubs and then water and mulch them.

Sunday 28th July was National Tree Day and Centre Manager Helen and her family helped plant trees at Band Hall Reserve in Birrong. While there Helen collected some more native plants for the Native Sensory Garden which the children have been planting since.

Gardening with children builds a strong appreciation for nature and introduces children to how interconnected our world is.

Koala Room

We have been exploring our senses in the Koala Room. We are using different materials to stimulate our sense of smell and taste and differentiate the various flavours and smells.

Dingo Room

We have been interested in learning about Australian Animals as our project. We read Wombat Stew today which involves so many Australian Animals and a song.

We have been extending our fine motor skills as we practice using the tongs for afternoon tea ourselves! We are getting so clever! You can try and strengthen those hand and finger muscles at home by practicing with tongs.

Kangaroo's Room

The Pre K kangaroos have continued to enjoy library visits and Urban Kindy, for the last 2 weeks we have been lucky enough to explore the winter fest at kibble park.

Back at school we enjoyed NADIOC week celebrations including a performance, books and cooking experiences.

We have been focusing on phonics and letter writing and have started a writing project which is a tree displayed on our wall. We have also been learning about shapes with play based experiences.

This week we have had our healthy and active week as we reinforce the munch and move messages through a range of physical play as well as cooking and discussions on healthy eating. Lots of great movement, dancing and yoga sessions throughout the rooms taking place.

We also had a visit from the Smart Farmer who brought their cow and calf to preschool. This was such a great hands on learning experience for all involved as we all learnt where milk comes from and how other dairy products are made. Lots of discussions followed on from this experience.

This week we had Constable Mark join us for a visit with the children to discuss safety and the police role within our community. This was a great learning experience for all and a great way for us to continue to build on our connections with our local community.

Another day that the children really enjoyed was our teddy bears picnic. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea together in the sunshine with our teddies and friends.

Urban kindy continues to be a favourite program for our JK prep children. They are loving going outside of our service and visiting our local Yandel’ora reserve. Many discoveries are being made as we explore the walking tracks and bush area, the pond as well as the park. Luckily the weather has been lovely for our adventures!

Last week all week long the children and educators wore there pyjama’s to school to help raise awareness for two very important causes, Asthma Australia & The National Pyjama Foundation. Each day the children came dressed in their pyjama’s with their favourite story books to share with their class.

For Asthma Australia, PJ Day was founded in 2009 by Montanna, a young girl who was living with asthma. She spent a lot of time in hospital and in her PJ's, so she wanted to find a way to support the asthma cause with the hope of one day finding a cure. Montanna went to Asthma Australia with her idea of staying in your PJ's as a fun way to raise money for asthma.

The Pyjama Foundation was founded in 2004 to give children in foster care the opportunity to change the direction of their lives with learning, life skills and confidence.

We collected gold coin donations as well as pyjama’s, clothing and books that were still in good condition to be donated to those in need.

On Friday 19th July, all the children at Jenny’s Kindergarten & Early Learning Leichhardt came dressed in their Pyjamas for the day as we hosted Pyjama Day for the Pyjama Foundation and Asthma Australia! The children participated in our own ‘Morning In’ with popcorn and a book reading session. The children were encouraged to bring in a book of their choice from home and shared it with the class. In the morning after sharing stories with one another the children enjoyed watching a short movie and shared delicious popcorn with one another. Pyjama day gave the children a sense of BEING. Children’s BEING relates to the present and them knowing themselves, building and maintaining relationships with others. What a beautiful and cosy day it was!

On Wednesday, 17th July JK Narellan Vale held their annual Child lead parent teacher conferences.

We had a large number of parents join us during three timed sessions.

During this time the parents were able to explore the rooms, looking at the program through the interest based displays around the rooms and discuss this with their child.

They received their child’s art folder to take home which included all of their masterpieces from the first six months of the year and were able to chat to their child’s teachers in regards to their learning and development.

The conferences were a very positive and rewarding experience.

This week the centre celebrated NAIDOC Week, during the week the children listened to a range of traditional Indigenous music and dancing. The children were fascinated to see the traditional clothing and instruments that were being used.

Across all the classrooms within the service collaborated to bring to life two very beautiful projects. The children learnt the song ‘Taba Naba’. Taba Naba is a popular dance about going out to the edge of the reef fishing. Like a folk dance it is joyful, describing the activities of everyday life. It is a dance everyone can share, and sharing is still very much part of Murray Islander life with kin, with in-laws, with the whole island, with people outside.

Today people sing old and newly composed songs about their winds, the birds, the sea creatures, the plants that go with the time of their wind. These are not just songs or dances which they enjoy. They are saying 'We are this kind of people, not like that group over there.'

Worimi Ngani! This week the children at Jenny’s Kindergarten & Early Learning Leichhardt have participated in NAIDOC Week. During this time the children from the Shining Stars, Racing Rockets and Pre Kindy had the opportunity to engage in a wide range of arts and craft and learning experiences in celebration of the history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Throughout the week the children explored a variety of indigenous music, stories, arts and instruments. A big focus during this weeks’ celebration was the children being able to work as a team together creating the Aboriginal Flag! Through the use of hand prints the children were encouraged to spread red, yellow and black paint onto the palm of their hands and place it onto a canvas. The children were extremely proud of their efforts and were able to share their learnings to their parents about the Aboriginal and Torre Strait Islander culture.

Sydney Dental came to visit JK Narellan Vale on Wednesday, 10th July.

The children in the 2-5 years rooms were able to participate in a dental awareness show and discussion before hopping onto the big chair to have their teeth individually checked.

All of the children thoroughly enjoyed this experience, also some were a bit apprehensive about getting in the chair.

This experience helped them to gain confidence in going to visit the dentist

Art is a Process

Learning to appreciate and interact with art is a vital component of a holistic approach to child development.

The Giraffe children have been engaging with different medium through their curriculum.

Rather than intervene when the hand panting began, the Educators allowed the children time to explore the texture of the paint, to compare the marks that they were making with the brush and with their hands, spoke with the children about the colour, temperature and placement of their marks and provided more materials when they needed them.

The educators further enriched the art experience by adding music to the room.

Classical music has been shown to ignite synapses in the brain than other types of music do not reach so the educators purposefully chose a selection of classical music to accompany the experience.

The easels were not our usual easels either, these easels were made by the Educators to allow the children to get to a lower level.

They were made by binding corflute posters that were donated by our local council.

The children at JK Padstow have been involved in a range of learning experiences around NAIDOC week. The theme “Voice, Treaty, Truth: Lets work together for a shared future” has been embedded in these experiences with the children exploring a range of indigenous stories, music, instruments and art. The children have been very interested in the Aboriginal flag, it’s design and meaning. The educators and children worked together to make an artwork inspired by the Aboriginal flag which is now hanging in our foyer. While engaging in the artwork the children and educators spoke about the knowledge and culture of indigenous Australians and the importance of maintaining culture and language. We respectfully acknowledge the traditional owners of the many lands on which our centres are located. We also acknowledge the knowledge of the traditional owners and their contribution to the education of young children. Their story began long before ours.

Lots of chatter still continued from our fun crazy hair and PJ week. The children and staff loved this week!! We took lots of photos and went through these to make our special room books for all to look through.

All our rooms are continuing to follow up on the children’s interests as they engage in co-programming and extend on their interests throughout the program.

In the Echidna room we focused on our fundamental skills, moving our bodies as we practiced different movements. Today we explored making Magnetic Rockets. The children started by drawing some planets on a paper plate with oil pastels and then we painted over these with watercolour paints.

Once dry, we attached some paper clips to the back of a rocket picture and placed this on our Solar System plate and then using a magnet under the plate watched as the rocket moved about the Solar System.

On Wednesday, 3rd July JK Narellan Vale had Diver Dave visit the centre.

The children were taught all about the different types of sea creatures found in rock pools and in the ocean.

They discussed the food chain and life cycles of some of the animals as well.

All of the children were able to look at, touch and hold some of the sea creatures including star fish, sea snails and an octopus.

All of the sea creatures Diver Dan brought with him he had caught diving at Coogee Beach that morning. After the show he was going back to Coogee Beach to release the sea creatures back into their natural habitat.

The Diver Dave show was a huge success with the children.

As part of our Mind Body and Soul element of the Specialised Early Learning Curriculum the Shining Stars engaged in our exciting extra curriculum activity of Yoga with Ms Marianna. Through this program we aim to educate children about health and fitness. We aim to embed healthy lifestyle choices from a young age and this is achieved by encouraging the children to participate in various physical activities such as yoga, dance and munch and move. The Shining Stars further developed their social skills as the children were able to share this experience with one another and demonstrated confidence when completing different stretches even if the stretches were a bit tricky!

Literacy skills develop right from birth and at JK Bathurst we take every opportunity to extend on children’s emerging literacy development.

In the 2-3 rooms we have maps on the wall at children’s height. This week the Educators enriched the learning environment by intentionally placing the jungle animals under the wall maps. The children recognised the symbolic representation of the animals on the maps and then found the corresponding animal. By the end of the week they were able to find Australia, Africa, Antarctica and America on the map.

In the Koala room, we have been focusing on our project “under the sea”. We have engaged the children in fine motor, sensory and creative experiences to explore the world underneath.

Experiences have included:

Cleaning shells with a brush (covered in sand)
Making play dough and stamping shells into them to transfer the patterns

Pre Kindy Yellow have been learning about animals recently. They started to show a particular interest in the life cycle of some of the animals they had been learning about. Miss Laura and Miss Abbey decided to extend on this and start a ‘life cycles’ learning topic. Their first point of focus was a ‘frog’. For a week, each day the children focused on a different stage of the frog’s life cycle. Through listening to different songs, reading a variety of books, partaking in various group discussions and watching educational videos, the children have developed an extensive understanding of the life cycle of a frog. We have now started to focus on the life cycle of a butterfly and will soon be focusing on the life cycle of a bee and chicken. Hatching Chicks will be coming to the centre on the 15th July for two weeks to follow up on the children’s interest of life cycles.

Today Pre Kindy channelled their inner scientists as the children participated in a colour experiment. As part of our STEM Education element of Jenny’s Specialised Early Learning Curriculum this week the children have been learning about their colours and to further extend on this, Pre Kindy explored each Primary colour and discussed how using these colours can make a rainbow! The children demonstrated self-help and hand eye coordination skills as they poured water into a glass jar followed by adding in different coloured food dye. Once all colours were added into the glass jars the children were able to independently identify and verbalise all the colours of a rainbow!

On Wednesday the 5th of June, Jenny's Kindy had a very special visitor... The wildlife animals! The children were very excited to meet some cuddly and very cool animals that live right here in Australia! The children made some new friends; Blossom the Possum, Freddy the Frog, Opal the Snake and Snappy the Crocodile. Blossom the Possum came in her own house that she had built from leaves and twigs - she was very tired as we learnt that possums are nocturnal and sleep all through the day. We then got to see how great Freddy the tree frog can climb up high. Our next animal was the happiest animal of all.. Snappy the Crocodile! He kept showing us his great big smile and the children were very brave as they stroked his bumpy skin and tail! The last animal had us ssssssoo excited - Opal the Snake! We got to feel her soft, silky skin and saw how she slithered back into her cosy home ready!

On Friday 31st May Pre Kindy from JK Leichhardt went on an adventure to Leichhardt Public School! As a further extension of our Specialised Early Learning Curriculum element JK Prep the children had the opportunity to meet and greet Leichhardt Public School’s kindergarten teachers. The children explored 3 different classrooms and joined in on a learning experience about insects and the life cycle of a butterfly! This was a great learning opportunity for Pre Kindy as the children had already started their learning on insects back at Pre-school! The kindergarten children also performed a song/dance in front of Pre Kindy where they showed off their number counting skills by singing a song about ‘Teen Numbers’. Before Pre Kindy headed back to JK Leichhardt, the children engaged in free play on the play equipment.

The children in the Toddler Room have been exploring light and shadows in the sun.

To extend on investigating light, The children used a light board to look at the shadows various materials make such as sticks, grass, shells, paper and sea pods.

To conclude, the children had a light show where they turned of the lights and used torches to make shadows on the walls. The children happily danced around trying to capture the shadows and made animals with their hands.

This week Pre K Kangas have welcomed our new part time educator Lalani to our group. Lalani has a Sri Lankin background and has shared some of her life story with us. We have begun exploring family structures and our own family. On our visit to Gosford Library we learnt a Russian song for Harmony week.

On Thursday, 21st March the children at Jenny’s Kindergarten Narellan Vale celebrated harmony Day. They were asked to wear something orange and participated in a variety of activities to support harmony. The children discussed the importance of everyone living together and the fact that everyone looks different but we are all the same on the inside. They discussed sharing, talking about our feelings and being kind to each other. The children in the 2-5’s and ASC rooms got together to form a heart to represent harmony. Happy Harmony Day from the children and staff at Jenny’s Kindergarten Leichhardt! What a wonderful day to celebrate and be a part of! The children really got into the spirit of Harmony Day engaging in many activities, learning opportunities and of course, the colour festival we had at the centre!! To celebrate, the children were encouraged to wear orange, symbolising harmony, peace and unification.

The children were engaging all throughout their day with activities based on Harmony Day. They were encouraged to create a picture of their interpretation on Harmony Day as their educators discussed that to be in harmony with each other is to care for one another; the children made love hearts using different orange coloured resources! We then further discussed that being harmonious is to also be understanding and accepting; we spoke about how we all look different and have different personalities and spoke about how it is a good thing to be different from one another. We then moved onto another craft experience where the children painted their own hands different colours to make hand prints; we explained to the children that all these colours are beautiful and all our hands together symbolises diversity and harmony!

In the afternoon, the children were all encouraged to participate in the Holi Celebration where the children used traditional powered paint to throw around in the air and decorate ourselves from head to toe in beautiful colours; what a lovely day it was!

We had a very busy Monday this week with the dentists from Hurstville Dental visiting the centre to do regular dental check ups on some of the children. They also spoke to the children about how to keep our teeth healthy by brushing them twice a day and by eating healthy foods and limiting treat foods. The children spent the rest of the week further investigating dental health. Monday was also the first day for Ms Kerro at our centre, she will be working in the Pre-Kindy classroom a couple of days a week for the next 2 months. Ms Kerro is introducing the children to the Chinese culture and language to make our centre more inclusive for children whose home language and culture is Chinese.

This week has been a busy week as all rooms follow up and extend on the children’s interest areas.

The Pre kindy room have been busy with a gardening focus, following up on interests and extending on our centre gardens. Information on this is displayed in the room and will continue to be added to.

Cooking has been a popular experience that children from all our rooms have been engaging in as we extend on the children’s group participation as well as interest in cooking. The best part of course is eating our yummy creations.

On Thursday afternoon, we had a large hail storm come through the area. The children watched as the rain became heavier and then the hail started. A lot of the children hadn’t seen hail before and so were very excited to explore the texture and coldness of the hail stones. We collected the hail stones and watched them melt in our hands. The older children talked about the hail stones and their transformation into water and where the hail comes from. This hail storm became an excellent learning opportunity.

This week has been a fun week as we have celebrated grandparents week. It has been so lovely having many of our grandparents join us for a morning of play and activities. We always love having visitors.

Today our pre kindy blue room spent the morning outside gardening. They weeded our vegetable gardens, dug up the dirt and watered all of the plants. The pre-kindy room: The children observed and monitored the growth process of the beans the children planted last week. The children also learnt letter A, circle the objects that begin with the letter A and complete worksheet.

On Monday 4th March, a group of children from Pre-Kindy went on their first excursion for the year. They caught the bus down to the Padstow Pet Centre with three educators and a parent. While at the Pet Centre, the children were introduced to a range of pets from fish, to birds, rabbits, guinea pigs and cats. The children got to hold and pet a range of animals and learnt about how to care for pets. The children then selected a new toy for our budgie “Pineapple” and for our goldfish “Orange” and “Mandarin.” Finally, the children and educators selected a new budgie as a friend for “Pineapple.” After much discussion and input from the educators, children and families, we named our newest pet “Coconut.”

The children had a visit from Feature Creatures reptile show on Friday 1st March. The children were entertained by a wide variety of creatures such as snakes, blue tongue lizards, crocodiles, spiders and insects. This hands on interactive experience had the children enthralled by the differences in colours and textures of the reptiles bodies as well as education through a musical show which explained in detail where the animals live, what they eat and how they survive in the wild. This experience was in celebration of World Wildlife Day.
